P.S. And for some background, here's the press release from Southeastern Louisiana University's Public Information Office:
Competitive purchasing of energy could apply to individuals, groups
Contact: Rene Abadie
9/27/10
HAMMOND – A method of purchasing energy that has resulted in millions of dollars in savings by large companies and municipalities could be adapted for individual and neighborhood use with consequent reductions in energy costs, according to an expert in the field.
Reverse auctions, in which large purchasers of power match their energy consumption needs with supplier capacity, are not just creating energy cost savings but also encouraging smarter energy production and allocation on the grid, explained David Wyld, Maurin Professor of Management at Southeastern Louisiana University.
“In deregulated environments – such as in Texas and a number of East Coast states – consumers are not limited to usual local provider but are able to purchase from a number of sources, along the lines of the deregulated telephone industry,” said Wyld. “In those environments, reverse energy would help consumers save on their energy bills and ‘go green’ in the process.”
Wyld’s proposal to develop an e-marketplace for consumers has been entered in the GE Ecomagination Challenge (www.challenge.ecomagination.com/ideas), which runs through the end of September. The challenge is seeking innovative ideas in smart energy generation and usage. Winning projects will be funded with a total of $200 million in capital. GE is using online votes to help determine the ideas that will move forward to become finalists for seed funding. Wyld is seeking votes on his “Reverse Energy” proposal from individuals and groups who support the concept at http://bit.ly/dcm5xw.
“One thing that is certain today is that for all the abundance of energy resources we have, there is a great deal of improvement in how we allocate, distribute, buy and sell electricity,” said Wyld, who serves as the director of the Reverse Auction Research Center. “With the advent of electrical deregulation in an increasing number of states, Louisiana not being one of them, and the newfound capability for businesses and consumers to actually return energy to the grid, the marketplace is ripe for a competitive bidding approach to bring real time supply and demand efficiency to the energy marketplace.”
Wyld’s proposal would be to develop an exchange site that would bring real time efficiencies to the energy market. It would be a competitive bidding exchange where individual consumers and groups of residents in an area could post their energy requirements and have rival energy providers compete for their business.
“In this environment, big utility firms would compete with both companies and individuals who would be returning excess energy capacity to the grid to supply the energy needs of individual consumers,” he explained.
Through a reverse auction process, consumers – acting individually or in concert with others in their area – would post their energy buying requirements on the exchange, he said. The pre-qualified utility companies and alternative energy providers would be able to bid for the business.
Wyld said reverse energy has the promise of incentivizing green energy procurement and bringing the benefits of competitive bidding to individuals and consumer groups.
“It’s an appropriate solution to give consumers power to choose their energy providers and for electrical power providers to compete to make green energy more available and more affordable for the growing numbers of consumers who find themselves with the right to choose their energy providers.”

Great Article from Hammond Action News: The Power of Humor and Analogy

White T-Shirt

I often joke about the "gallows humor" that many of us show on campus in light of all that is going on (just a trait of those who never thought they'd be able to finish their Ph.D!). So, gotta send a shout out to our friends at Hammond Action News (http://www.hammondactionnews.com/) - with some very, very creative folks behind this site that is too good for our small market.

They have outdone themselves this time with a parody article on the budget situation - see:

"ALBERTSONS PLEDGES TO GO GREEN AND GOLD"

Classsssssssic! Great stuff - only able to cut meat and seafood - and the parking quip!

Pass this along.....

I Need Your Vote for My Idea - Reverse Energy - in the GE Ecomagination Challenge

Hello friends,

GE is running a contest through the end of September for innovative ideas in smart energy. This international context will help the company determine which projects to fund with $200 million in capital. You can see my idea, "Reverse Energy," at this link and vote for it on their GE Ecomagination Challenge site:

Reverse Energy

Your vote will help my chances of seeing the project funded - and it will be an innovative way to enable us individual consumers to take advantage of reverse auctions - like big companies and big government agencies do right now - to save on our energy bills AND help promote alternative energy through competition! Please cast your vote AND help me by posting this to your Facebook, your Twitter, your Email list, anything to help drum-up votes.

I very much appreciate your help!

David

Test Scores Up, Enrollment Up....All Good News, But the Dark Budget Clouds Loom

Graduation ceremony for Southeastern Louisiana...Image via Wikipedia

Yes, the picture looks very promising on our numbers here at Southeastern Louisiana University - student-wise at least. See this story from Ken Benitez's Action News 17 site (http://actionnews17.com/):

Still, there's those budget issues on the horizon....the distant drumbeat seems to be getting closer.

A College Degree: Still the Best Way to Avoid Unemployment

Hey, this article will make you feel a bit better about pursuing your degree and working till 4 a.m. on that project tonight, only to be facing an uncertain job market with certain student loans when you graduate! Written by Tony Moton of Yahoo Education, the article, entitled, "Want To Avoid Unemployment?: Statistics show a clear link between education level and employment," makes an especially good case for business degrees, even at a time when studying business is a bit out of fashion.

The Best Way to Avoid Unemployment - Yahoo! Education

So hang in there, get that paper written and drink a Full Throttle with a 5-hour Energy chaser to make that commute to your 8 a.m. class (just please be careful driving!).

Southeastern - What a "Big Lots"-level Bargain Compared to Texas!

Southeastern Louisiana University Student Unio...Image via Wikipedia

OK, OK, all the time, we hear how low our tuition is compared to our peer institutions in neighboring states - much less in comparison to national figures. Well, the bottom line is that an education at Southeastern is a bargain - a Tuesday Morning, Big Lots, Dollar Tree-level bargain compared to what students pay in Texas (even BEFORE TOPS kicks in!).

This was driven home by reading this article by Erin Mulvaney of the Dallas Morning News:
Texas' financial aid for college students could dwindle even more | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

Her article spoke to the rapid rise that in tuition and fees that has occurred over the past five years or so across the landscape of Texas public colleges and universities (and trust me, you will see sticker shock!). Now, I'm not quite yet in the teen college shopping experience just yet, but Mulvaney's article prompted me to do a little research comparing the total tab at my alma mater (Stephen F. Austin) and Southeastern. According to the tuition and fee calculator on their website, your Fall 2010 tuition and fees at Stephen F. Austin State University would run you - are you sitting down - $3,498.75 if you are a Texas resident or if you are from Louisiana, you would still be able to pay at that level due to the fact they offer Louisiana-residents a "border state rate." What's your tab for Fall 2010 at Southeastern Louisiana University - even AFTER our 10% tuition increase - $2,014.80. OK, quick math - that means for the same size, same level school, the Texas version would run you $1,483.95 - almost 74% more! Multiply that by a full academic year and then times the 4, 5, 6 years you would be attending - hey, that's your new Hyundai or a nice down payment on a house (and again, that's based on the tab BEFORE your TOPS scholarship applies)!

When you look at those kind of numbers, you understand why our higher education leaders keep emphasizing how low our tuition is and while yes, it makes your happy today, but to stay a leading university, Southeastern and all Louisiana institutions have to have a proper level of support AND students paying a bill that is not at the "Big Lots" level!

Want to Increase Freshman Retention and Progression?: Encourage Facebook - Really!

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...Image via CrunchBase

OK, the real shock for anyone who has been out of college for 20, 10, or even 5 years when they see students in a college classroom or the library today is the omnipresence of students "working" on their laptops and netbooks. Often times, even in the classroom environment, students will be on Facebook even while "learning" is taking place. Should we do as many of my colleagues would do and slam the laptop shut (not too hard, please!) or should Facebooking be encouraged!

Well, according to a new study featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education's Wired Campus section, Facebook may actually play a role in helping students stay connected on campus and succeed (and most importantly these days - stay and progress!). Read the full article here:

Interesting stuff...pass along (even to your Prof!)....

Report from the Hammond Daily Star on the State of the University with Fall Enrollment Numbers In....and They Are Up

Southeastern Louisiana University's state-of-t...Image via WikipediaWell, here's a front-page article from the Hammond Daily Star, written by Heidi Rogers Kinchen, with a report of where the university stands after the announcement that against all odds, the enrollment numbers for Fall 2010 exceeded expectations. Read Heidi's article at the link below:

Of course, it's a mixed bag budget-wise. However, thanks for all the students and their families who continue to show faith in our institution and are making their investment in the future here at Southeastern Louisiana University!

Bobby Jindal, 55th and current Governor of the...Image via WikipediaGovernor Bobby Jindal made his second visit in a week to Southeastern on Friday, September 3, 2010. While it was a $25 a plate function for the Hammond Chamber of Commerce and thus many could not attend (hey, let the record show I was teaching classes at the time and made do with a quick, free brown bag sandwich!), here are some clips from our local intrepid reporter, Ken Benitez of Action News 17 (http://www.actionnews17.com/) for those of you who could not attend (whether by schedule or as you weighed the price of admission versus a Chik-Fil-A lunch!).

Gov. Bobby Jindal

President John Crain of Southeastern

Rep. Steve Pugh

Senator Ben Nevers

It's good to see the attention on Southeastern - let's see - and hope - for the best!
