Is Social Networking Actually Making Us Less Connected...And Less Human: One MIT Professor Thinks So

A photograph of media theorist Sherry TurkleImage via Wikipedia

What is social media doing to us? An ironic question I guess since you are reading this on a blog, and likely on your phone or iPad! One MIT Professor, Sherry Turkle, argues that all our technological connections are destructive to our real connectedness. The Guardian describes the situation in its opening its coverage of her book:

The way in which people frantically communicate online via Twitter, Facebook and instant messaging can be seen as a form of modern madness, according to a leading American sociologist. "A behaviour that has become typical may still express the problems that once caused us to see it as pathological," MIT professor Sherry Turkle writes in her new book, Alone Together, which is leading an attack on the information age.

You can read the complete article below:

And of course, she appeared on The Colbert Report and discussed her ideas there. Watch below and comment here on the blog (consider as Colbert asked whether texting is OK at a funeral?):

Environmental journalism supports the protecti...Image via Wikipedia

Government programs aimed at promoting a cleaner environment can often suffer from both ballooning costs and lagging participation rates to deter them from achieving measurable successes. Just How Bad Are State Budgets Nationwide?: Read This Summary of a Report Put Together by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

Here at the Reverse Auction Research Center (http://www.reverseauctionresearch.com/), we've been urging government leaders at all levels to adopt the best practice of reverse auctions in their procurement operations in order to save on their acquisition costs. And certainly going forward, the business case will be especially compelling at the state level, given the deluge of red ink state lawmakers are facing in 2011. To see the extent of the problem on a national basis, please see this release from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (http://www.cbpp.org/)

States Continue to Feel Recession’s Impact — Center on Budget and Policy Priorities

We will have a much more detailed article coming out in the coming days on how reverse auctions can be an effective tool - even in the current budget years - for many states as governors and legislators across the nation fight to close massive budget gaps.
